Care.com Nanny Scam

If you use care.com for nannying jobs DO NOT respond to job inquires that you receive via text or anywhere other than through the messaging part of the care.com website. This has been a PSA.

I recently came very very close to falling victim to a nanny scam before I realized what was happening and figured it would be a good idea to explain the scam to prevent it from happening to other care.com users.

I created a profile on care.com about a week ago. Almost instantly I received several messages through the site from families that were interested. A few days later I received this text message:

I emailed her that I was interested in the details of the job and this was her response:

Good Morning,
 
How are you doing?I will be needing you for my Son Ken. My name is Bailey Fulgham and my husband’s name is Jerry Fulgham .Ken is a great kid and easy to get along with.He is sweet, loving boy who loves play, be outside,go to parks, go on walks and just have fun. He is 4 years old, very bright, engaging, and love to explore his surroundings.He is free eater, well cultured, very well behaved and well mannered and he is not allergy to food or anything. We are looking for someone who will be caring, kind, and patient with him.This offer is for someone of well mannered attitudes, neatness and good sense of relationship, so if you are interested in this offer PLEASE answer the following  questions

I thought the email and the information about her son was strange but I answered her questions and then received this response:

Good Evening,
 
After a lengthy discussion with my husband, we decided to choose you for this job and we hope you will do this job diligently,the good news is that we got a new apartment in Campus area which will make it easier for both of us because we are not far from each other.We agree with your charges per hour and your schedule for this job.We also decided to give you one week advance payment to show our commitment to you so as to have you booked and secured prior to our arrival because we are rounding off plans and allotting money to issues that should be settled before we arrived but unfortunately my Mother in-law died some hours ago, so we will be traveling for the burial anytime from now,the burial is slated for this week,we will be so busy with the  burial of my mother-in-law because she will be finally laid to rest this week but we will be there with you on Saturday February 20th,and you can start the next day. We decided to give you one week advance payment to show our commitment to you,we don’t want to owe you when we get there because we plan ahead for our bills and there is something else you will help us with and we will be happy if you can do it for us.We will issue your one week advance payment plus the Landlord'(Rent) payment as we will be busy with the burial of my mother-in-law because she will be buried this week and the landlord told us there are other people who are interested in the apartment and we don’t want to lose the apartment for any reason,the apartment look perfect for my family and  it is nearer to you.We will issue the check in your name,so when you clear the check you will deduct your one week advance payment and help and pay the landlord on our behalf and get the keys and the receipt for us,we would have handled this ourselves but because we will be busy with the burial we can’t and the landlord needs someone that can get the keys physically and we just have to entrust you with this.If we don’t pay the house rent this week he will give the apartment to another person and we don’t want that.This really a trying time for us.We will be so happy if you do this for us,we will need the below information from you:

Usually when I apply for a job of this sort once a family has decided they want to hire me, they offer me the position instead of just saying “we have decided to choose you for this job.” This put me in an uncomfortable position with the other families who I had also been taking to through the care.com website. It also seemed really strange to me that these people would feel comfortable entrusting a complete stranger that they found through the internet with the responsibility of paying their lease. Additional red flags were that she agreed with my charged per hour, but in my previous email I had explained that whatever she thought best between 10 and 20 dollars and hour would be fine with me and she asked for my cell phone number even though the beginning of our correspondences were via text. However, I figured that these mistakes were just a result of the stressor of losing her mother-in-law and I was distracted by the offer of the advanced payment (broke college students beware!) and the fact that she included a picture convinced me of her legitimacy so I responded with my mailing information and told her that I would be happy to help.

Three days later I got this email:

Good Morning,
 
How are you doing today?I am sorry for my late response it was due to the preparation for the burial,i also want to notify you that i got your name and address,i will let you know the day the check will be delivered to you.I don’t want you to panic if you don’t get a quick response from us it was due to the burial, be rest minded you have been given this job.We i will send the landlord’s information to you as soon as we can.Let me know you got my email.

I responded that I understood the circumstances and she didn’t need to apologize and I asked if she would be mailing the check to my campus PO box. This was her response to that message.

Good Evening,
 
i am sorry for not getting back to you sooner,on our way to the burial we were involve in a car accident that left my husband and i very injured,thank God Ken escaped and he is fine but my husband and i have a serious injuries and we are currently at the hospital receiving treatment,we will be discharged on Thursday 18th and we will be there on 19th which is Friday for sure.you can start the next day.
 
Also i want to notify you the check has been mailed out and you will get the check Today or Monday through USPS(POSTAL SERVICE),when you received the check i want you to go and deposit it immediately,when the check clears you will deduct $300 for yourself as part of one week pay and the rest ,i will send the landlord’s information as soon as the check clears and i will send you the full address of where we will staying as soon as we are discharged from the hospital.I believe you will help and take care of everything before we arrive and we really thank you for your help.Ken can’t wait to meet you.Let me know you got my email and i want you to text me on 440-374-7414. Thank you for your patience and understanding and keep us in your prayers.

Here is where I started to become really skeptical. I’m far from the luckiest person alive but this just seemed like an unbelievable stretch of bad luck for this family. Also, she had not answered my question about the PO box and the dates she shared regarding when she would make it to the apartment in this email where different than the ones in the previous emails. I googled the area code of the phone number and found it to be in Ohio and then searched white pages for a Bailey or Jerry Fulgham living in Ohio; neither existed. I was still confused as to why she hadn’t told me where her apartment was (other than that it was close to my campus) or who the lease was going to but I responded that I was sorry that she was having to go through all of this and would let her know when the check came. An authentic (looking) check for $1,989 made out to me arrived the next day so I sent her this email:

Hi Bailey,

I received your check! When you get a chance please send along your landlords information and I will bring the money over.

Thanks,
Cat

This was her response:

Okay i will do that asap? i want you to deposit the check now and let me know when you done ok

It did not make sense to me that she would not send me the landlords information until I had cleared the check so in a final attempt to not get screwed by this overall very weird situation I google searched “Bailey Fulgham Care.com.” The search brought me to a website called thedailyscam.com with an article about 2016 “Nanny Scams” against care.com users. In the article I found that many of the emails that Bailey sent to me were sent to care.com users verbatim and at this point I realized what had happened.

How the scam works:

The scam targets online banking users. Because the check totally looks authentic (even my Dad thought it was real), recipients will upload the check to their online banking, withdraw the cash they need to pay the landlord and go pay it to whoever the scammer directs them too. What those who fall victim to the scam do not know is that it takes a few days for a check to clear. In 3-4 days you would be contacted by your bank and told that you tried to deposit a fake check and by that point the scammer would be long gone with $1,689 of your money. You think they are being super generous by offering the advanced payment but they are actually just forcing you to make a major cash withdraw from you account for them.

What to look out for:

  1. Do NOT respond to job offers from anywhere other than the care.com message board.
  2. Run a check on the potential employer to confirm that they exist via Whitepages.
  3. Don’t be convinced of authenticity because of pictures, specificity or pity over their situation.
  4. Don’t get so blind sighted by the offer of advanced pay that you miss obvious red flags and discrepancies.
  5. Make sure the potential employer is answering the questions you send them in your emails and not sending generic cut and paste messages.
  6. Be mindful of poor grammar and punctuation. Aside from the event of a possible language barrier, you should expect professional emails from your potential employer with correct grammar and punctuation.
  7. Pay attention to inconsistencies in dates and times or even names. The name on the check sent to me was from Larry from LA and in previous emails Bailey shared that her husbands name was Jerry and the area code of her cell phone was OH.

 

Apparently this is a relatively new problem and care.com is working on fixing it but I would definitely recommend looking out for yourself and being reasonably skeptical about potential job inquires from outside the  website.

Utilizing HD Skills Across Multiple Platforms

During the past week I have gotten several chances to utilize the skills I have acquired throughout my Help Desk experience this year.

1:1 Summit:

On Friday, 4/10 I got the opportunity to contribute to and participate in Burlington’s 1:1 iPad summit.  Roughly 100 educators and students came to Burlington High School and Marshall Simonds Middle School to learn about all of the wonderful things Burlington is doing in term of 1:1 implementation. At the high school, the day started with a panel which I was asked to be on to provide a student perspective. Alongside me in the panelScreen Shot 2015-04-16 at 9.44.53 AM was Jenn Scheffer, Jenn Judkins, and Patrick Larkin. The panel was a great experience and required a lot of quick and analytical thinking to be able address the questions directed towards me. The panel also required honesty, especially when I received the question “What was the best and the worst parts of the 1:1 implementation?”  I shared that I was a freshman the year that the devices where distributed and I had never had an i-device before so I spent the majority of my freshman year in classes never looking up from an endless stream of games that had never been so easily accessible to me. I also shared however that having my iPad taught me time management. Four years later my iPad has zero games on it and I know how to manage my time and stay focuses. Schools looking to start a 1:1 implementation need to be open for a year or two of working out the kinks, it’s not going to work perfectly from the start. I also shared that the best part of the implementation for me was the freedom it gave me. In middle school, when I was given a project it had to be done exactly how the teacher described it had to be but when I entered high school, a project proposal was given to us and we had the freedom to use any app or website to complete the project that we chose to.

After the summit we broke off into tours. Several people requested to be in my tour specifically so I could answer the questions they did not have a chance to ask me in the panel. It’s very exciting to be a part of a school that stands as such an inspiration to other schools and I was answering questions until well after the tour was over. I never even got a chance to see the student showcase because I was answering questions and speaking about my experience until it was time to file back into the auditorium. Overall I think the day was a huge success and I’m honored to have been given the chance to participate in this event again.

Starting My TED Video:

This year I will be giving a talk on self esteem as a part of Burlington’s first ever TEDx event. As a portion of my talk I am creating a video as an experiment to prove my theory that as kids grow up, their self esteem goes down. This week was the first week of Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 9.55.54 AMshooting and I have been very busy juggling this project in addition to my regular work in Help Desk. I would prefer not to share the concept of my video until I have completed it but I am very happy with the results so far. Stay tuned to my blog to see the results of the video.

“Hey you’re the Help Desk girl right?”

At this point in the year most of my teachers and family members have figured out that I’m a member of the Help Desk. It’s becoming a common occurrence that I’ll be sitting in a class and one of my teachers will call me to the front of the room and ask me to help them with a technology problem. One of these occurences happened this week. I walked into my anatomy class and my teacher said “yay my Help Desk girl is here.” She was having a problem with viruses on Google Chrome. Having had this problem myself before I knew exactly how to help her and thought I would share for others who are having a similar problem because it is an easy fix. Click the word chrome on the upper left corner of your screen and then select “About Google Chrome.” Once in About, click “extensions” on the left side and deselect “enabled” on every extension you do not want on your computer. After this you can delete them entirely and you will have no more problems with Chrome viruses.

Overall this week has been hectic, but very rewarding. I got the chance to share my experience to a nationwide audience, I had to adapt and think quickly and critically to the questions I was asked, I got several chances to develop my interpersonal skills and collaborate with students and teachers, and I got to use creativity and initiative in my video. I’m very thankful for the opportunities I have received because of Help Desk and hope I continue to get similar opportunities in my future.

Month of March Progress Update

This past month Mira and I have been working to create a video entry for the Project Yellow Light Scholarship. Project Yellow Light is a scholarship competition designed to bring about change. As an applicant you have one clear mission: create a video to encourage your friends
to avoid distracted driving. The video has to be exactly 25 or exactly 55 seconds because the winning video is remade by AdCouncil and aired on television.

Screen Shot 2015-03-31 at 1.14.00 PMAfter finding the scholarship opportunity I contacted Mira asking her to team up. We named ourselves Meerkat Productions (Mira+Cat=Meerkat) and I recently created the stellar logo picture to the right.

In preparatiScreen Shot 2015-03-31 at 1.49.59 PMon for shooting the video we purchased a green sheet from Joanne’s Fabric and sized it so that it would cover the portion of my car which would be shown in the video so we could create the illusion of a moving car when we were just shooting in my garage. An example of this allusion can be seen in the clip to the left.

The guidelines for the video are pretty broad. We decided to create the 25 second one because it would be short, sweet and to the point. Instead of the usual route of telling people not to text and drive, we decided to hone in on virtually all distractions as well as the common excuses people use to justify those distractions.

Within a few days of uploading the video, I was contacted by a friend of mine who is interning for the organization EndDD.org. She asked if I would mind if she featured our video on her website because she loved the concept and thought it did a nice job addressing the message they were trying to present.

#TechTeamMA Individualized vs. Personalized Learning

Tonight (Thursday, March 12) I will be hosting the #TechTeamMA twitter chat. If you are interested in participating, head to my twitter account (@cathoyt_) between 8:00pm and 9:00pm. The topic is discussing the differences between individualized and personalized learning. This topic is relatively confusing so I thought it would be smart to provide some background information for chat participants to look over before the chat began.

Recently three articles have been brought to my attention. The first being The Washington Post’s article titled “Four reasons to seriously worry about ‘personalized learning.’”  The second being Education Week’s  article titled “What Is ‘Personalized Learning’? Educators Seek Clarity.” And the third, and possibly the most clear being Mind Shift’s article titled “What Do We Really Mean When We Say ‘Personalized Learning.'” Read through those if you want to see the full inspiration for this talk, but I’ll summarize. Basically, individualized learning is when teachers are given the option to review test scores, previous work of students, etc and base their curriculum for the year off of what they perceive from these past scores and projects to be their intelligence level. Intentionally or otherwise, this is how most classrooms today are structured. The recognition of the use of individualized learning brings about obvious questions of morality. Is it right for teachers to be allowed access to past performances and base the way in which they are taught and the level they are taught at off this entirely? In my opinion, no.

Personalized learning is the other option. Personalized learning gives students the power and the freedom to structure the class and the work they create in the class around their specific interests, passions and desires. This makes teaching more difficult for the teacher as they have to be accepting of a variety of different projects on one specific topic but it also makes learning more rewarding for the student because students have the freedom to convey information and complete assignments using tools that they are comfortable with or interested in exploring, and by default students often learn more. Education Week suggests that technology is one of the greatest ways to achieve this goal, because it provides students with virtually (ha, get it?) unlimited resources with which they can work with.

A student tech team is the epitome of a class structured around student-choice and personalized learning and during tonight’s chat we hear from members of these teams and hopefully dive more deeply into the many benefits of classes structured around the passions of the student.

Weekly Reflection 2/23/15 – 2/27/15 (Twenty-third Week)

We are about a month into second semester and I have found I am extremely thankful that Help Desk is a one semester class and I get to spend the rest of the year working alongside peers. Last semester I was the lone member in Help Desk period six and was expected to handle every problem entirely on my own. I learned a lot and gained tons of confidence as well as problem solving skills but I am relieved and excited to have the chance to bounce ideas off my peers and problem solve as a team for the remainder of the year.

Our focus for this past week has been solely on the Makerspace. Aside from assisting the usual few customers during the period and preparing for the Live Google Hangout I will be running solely this Friday to discuss Makerspaces in honor of Digital Learning Day, myself, Nikhil and Jake have been working to create the Makerspace. Our 3D printer has arrived and been assembled and furniture has been removed, installed and reorganized. It’s been only a few days and the 3D printer is in popular demand. I will even be getting the very cool opportunity to bring my Anatomy and Physiology class down to the Makerspace later next week to teach my classmates how to use the 3D printer and together as a class we will be creating an anatomically correct replica of a cat heart which will coincide with our current dissection. This is an excellent experience and it is very exciting that even before it has opened, the Makerspace is being used exactly in the way we had hoped; peer to peer exploration and teaching. I look forward to the continuation of this project and encourage those who are interested in Burlington’s Makerspace project to stay updated with my blog.
